Like a sponge, our oceans are absorbing increasing amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. Over the past 200 years, the world’s seas have absorbed more than 150 billion metric tons of carbon from human activities. Currently, that’s a worldwide average of 15 pounds per person a week, enough to fill a coal train long enough to encircle the equator 13 times every year. CO2 concentrations are now higher than at any time during the past 800,000 years, and the current rate of increase is likely unprecedented in history.

The consequences of disrupting what has been a relatively stable ocean environment for tens of millions of years are now starting to show. The massive amount of carbon dioxide being absorbed by the ocean dissolves in seawater as carbonic acid. This process is known as ocean acidification, and it’s literally causing a sea change that is threatening the fundamental chemical balance of ocean and coastal waters from pole to pole.

For many years I had been painting the Ocean’s surface, I’ve always been fascinated with the magnitude and power and the universal timelessness and optimism of the horizon.

I wanted this new series of paintings to work differently, I sought to disrupt the horizon line now affected by pollution and to focus more on the sensations of the paintings. The paintings are also infused with a certified carbon tech patented mineral product and as the paintings dry, they will clean and purify the air acting as a filtration system absorbing and purifying 95% of indoor air pollution for years, neutralizing harmful air pollutants such as VOC’s and Carbon Dioxide.
